Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots, like an inner tube poking through weak places in a tire. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. Pouches (plural) are called diverticula. The condition of having diverticula is called diverticulosis. About 10 percent of Americans over the age 40 and half of all people over age 60 have diverticulosis. Diverticulitis is more severe as it is accompanied by abdominal pain.

Rapid Gastric Emptying
Rapid gastric emptying, or dumping syndrome, happens when the lower end of the small intestine (jejunum) fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach. “Early” dumping begins during or right after a meal. Symptoms of early dumping include nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and shortness of breath. “Late” dumping happens 1 to 3 hours after eating. Symptoms of late dumping include weakness, sweating, and dizziness. Many people have both types.
