Mucoid plaque is a substance the body produces to protect itself from unhealthy environmental factors. The colon, for example, produces this plaque to protect itself from the artificial additives and fats in refined and over-processed foods. This plaque surrounds the unhealthy foods to help them move more easily through the digestive system.

An unfortunate side effect of plaque is the fact it accumulates against the walls of the colon. As a result, the waste within the colon becomes difficult to pass and also becomes stuck against the internal lining. As the waste sits on the walls, toxins are passed back into the bloodstream.  These toxins can lead to a number of ailments, including skin disorders, persistent fatigue, and allergies.

The plaque that develops in the colon is not the same as the healthy mucus produced by the colon, which helps to protect it. Mucoid plaque, on the other hand, is created when the colon is devolving towards an unhealthy state.

Unlike the healthy mucus produced in the colon, plaque is composed of mucin, which includes fecal matter, lymph, and proteins.  It forms a thick covering of mucus within the colon, which can sometimes be found on waste being expelled from the body.

Side Effects of Plaque

One of the most common and recognizable side effects of a buildup of mucoid plaque is the onset of constipation. Constipation occurs as the colon becomes plugged up by the plaque and waste is not able to pass through the bowels.

Individuals that are not experiencing constipation, however, may still have an accumulation of plaque on their colon walls without realizing it. For this reason, it is best for everyone to occasionally cleanse their colons. A colon cleansing can be accomplished through fasting, by using an enema or water colonic, or by using an all-natural organic supplement.

Treating Mucoid Plaque

A cleansing fast can be helpful in removing plaque, though it will not necessarily remove the accumulated waste that has become stuck against the lining. An enema may likewise clean the lining, but only the first few inches of the lower portion. A water or high colonic can cleanse the digestive system more thoroughly, but can also cause damage if implemented improperly. For these reasons, many people choose to use an organic supplement to remove mucoid plaque from the colon.

When choosing an all-natural supplement, it is important to select one that works through oxygenation. Supplements providing a laxative effect serve only to remove the waste that was going to be removed from the colon anyway. An oxygen-based colon cleanser, on the other hand, liquefies the plaque adhering to the lining and allows it to be easily removed from the colon. After using one of these supplements, the resulting bowel movement is often covered in the plaque. In fact, some individuals expel “ropes” of plaque and lose several pounds following a thorough cleansing.

In order to prevent the plaque buildup, it is best to follow a high fiber diet including  vegetables, fruits, and whole grain foods. Fiber helps prevent the accumulation of mucoid plaque in two ways.  First of all, fiber does not encourage the colon to produce excessive amounts of mucus because these foods are healthful.  Moreover, fiber helps draw moisture into the stool to add bulk while loosening it to make it easier to pass through the bowels successfully.
