There are a number of ways individuals may choose to cleanse their colons. Among the most common are the home colonic, the home enema, and the use of colon cleansing supplements. Understanding the differences between these forms of colon cleansers, including their pros and cons, is beneficial when choosing the right one.
The Home Colonic
This particular procedure has been around for hundreds of years. In fact, some documentation suggests its use as far back as 1500 BC.
In its early years, the colonic was broadly considered to be a viable cure for many illnesses. Since these earlier times, however, scientists and medical specialists have been divided on whether or not this method is beneficial. Many specialists swear by the colonic (also known as hydrotherapy), while others maintain it isn’t beneficial and may possibly even be dangerous. These specialists generally have very little knowledge or practical experience with the dynamics of hydrotherapy.
Colonic hydrotherapy is a method of cleansing the colon. With hydrotherapy, the bowels are cleansed and it is not necessary to rush to the restroom to get rid of the waste because the filtered water flows in and then back out of the entire length of the colon.
The equipment used for a colonic at home is a closed system. Therefore, you don’t have to deal with any odor. All of the waste, including feces, mucus, and toxic material, goes directly into the sewer line.
The Home Enema
The home enema is another method for cleansing the bowels. Like the home colonic, an enema also enjoys a long history. In fact, Hippocrates used enemas for fever therapy in the 4th and 5th century B.C. and the Lewis & Clark Expedition received instructions for using enemas to treat various illnesses such as fever.
Unfortunately, an enema can only cleanse the first several inches of the bowels. In addition, it generally just softens the stool rather than cleans it completely. At the same time, an enema can be helpful at washing out some accumulated waste.
The enema does not effectively cleanse as much of the bowels as the colonic method. In addition, the home enema is often more uncomfortable than hydrotherapy, with most involving using water and soap for cleansing. Since there is no return waste tube with the enema, you are more likely to inadvertently make a mess with an enema. Most people can only hold the enema in for about 5 minutes, with the warm water enema being easier to hold in than the cold water enema.
The Herbal Colon Cleansing Supplement
Natural herbal supplements are generally the preferred method for cleansing the colon because they are effective yet does not require inserting instruments into the anus as with the home colonic or the enema. Effective herbal supplements should not simply have a laxative effect, as this only serves to soften the stool that is about to be expelled from the body anyway.
Rather than working as a laxative, the herbal supplement should actually liquefy the waste, mucus, and sludge that have become imbedded in the colon. This allows the waste to be more easily removed from the colon, resulting in a more thorough cleansing.
Herbal colon cleansing supplements are also a cleaner method for cleansing the colon, as the need to have a bowel movement is not immediate and does not come on suddenly. Rather, you can continue your normal routine while using an herbal supplement to remove impacted waste.
The Best Colon Cleansing Method for You
Regardless of the method you use to cleanse your colon, all three of the aforementioned are relatively safe is properly executed. A home colonic or enema, however, is riskier than herbal supplements because they involve inserting foreign objects in your body. If you’re not careful, you can damage rectal tissue or make the problem worse. Therefore, care must be taken when cleansing the colon with one of these methods.
When using an herbal supplement, care must also be taken when selecting the proper supplement to use. Some work only as a laxative and do not remove the built up sludge in the digestive tract. It is essential to select an oxygen-based supplement as these are the ones proven to liquefy waste imbedded in the lining of your colon.
Regardless of the method you select, be sure to accompany it with a healthy diet. This involves eating foods high in fiber such as fresh fruits, green vegetables, and whole grains such as wheat bread (not enriched or bleached). In addition, you should drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, which can also lead to constipation. Finally, get plenty of exercise because regular exercise helps keep the entire digestive system working efficiently.
