Constipation

Constipation is a common condition from which nearly everyone suffers at some time or another. In fact, approximately 4 million people in the United States suffer from occasional or frequent bouts of being constipated. In more severe cases, the condition does not come and go on its own. Rather, proactive steps must be taken to reverse the factors causing the digestive dilemma and prevent it from occurring in the future.

Symptoms of a Constipated Colon

The state of being constipated may be characterized by infrequent or difficult bowel movements or a complete lack of bowel movements altogether. Whenever waste is passed by a constipated person, it will generally be hard and dry due to water being reabsorbed by the colon while the bowel movement remains inside the digestive tract too long. The waste may also be small but still very difficult to expel from the body because of this dryness. Even after waste is successfully eliminated, usually every few days or so, the person may still feel “full” or bloated rather than relieved or a frequent urge to eliminate without success.

Difficulty in having bowel movements can strike anyone at any age, from infants to the elderly and even from humans to pets, but it occurs more commonly in individuals over the age of 65. Often, eliminatory problems present as a side effect of taking certain medications or from maintaining unhealthy lifestyle habits. For example, poor diet and lack of physical activity can have a negative impact on digestive regularity since chemicals and preservatives in food inhibit the body’s ability to extract nutrients and weak intestinal muscles hinder digestive efficiency.

Negative Health Effects of Being Constipated

If left untreated, constipation can lead to other, negative health conditions. Some individuals experience persistent fatigue and moodiness while others are afflicted with foul body odor and bad breath.   • Fresh fruits
  • Raw vegetables
  • Whole grain breads
  • Brown rice and whole wheat pasta

  • Legumes and sprouts
  • Wild berries and raisins

Fiber supplements may also be used to encourage regularity but these should be used only in moderation and for short periods. Some types of fiber supplements, such as Psyllium, present dangerous side effects especially if taken over extended periods. However, a person can even suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction to some of these herbal supplements through non-direct exposure, such as within an occupational or manufacturing environment.

All-natural colon cleansing methods can be used to provide relief for symptoms of many types of digestive difficulty. The most common forms of colon cleansing are enemas, laxatives, high colonics, and the use of organic health supplements. Enemas can be messy and they do not cleanse the entire digestive system, so they are probably not the best option.
