Colon Infection

A colon infection occurs when certain bacteria take hold inside the colon. Bacteria exist everywhere. Your body routinely kills off bacteria, but sometimes it isn’t so successful and these organisms can invade your body and begin to wreck havoc.

How Does the Colon Become Infected in the First Place?

The colon is generally a very resilient organ. With over 70% of the body’s immune system located within the colon, it seems counterintuitive that any colon infection would take place. Nonetheless, harmful bacteria can enter your body in many ways. Everything from drinking impure water to eating undercooked foods to kissing your ill child goodnight can introduce nasty germs into your body. Usually, the bacteria don’t stand a chance against your body’s defenses, but some of these germs are highly adaptable.

Diseases of the Colon

One of the most dangerous causes of colon infection can be found in hospitals and nursing homes—the Clostridium difficile (or C-diff) germ was responsible for 100 deaths over an 18-month time span in one Canadian hospital!

C-diff resides in the colon and spreads through spores found in feces. These spores cannot be killed by conventional household cleaners and that’s why it spreads so easily. What really makes C-diff dangerous is that it is resistant to many antibiotics. When you are given antibiotics, even the beneficial bacteria are killed and this provides the C-diff the opportunity to take over.

Diverticulitis is another problem that can result from a colon infection. Diverticulitis is a condition wherein the colon develops small pouches in the colon that begin to bulge outward. These outpockets can easily become inflamed and infected. In America, ten percent of adults over forty years of age have Diverticulitis. The condition becomes more common with increasing age; after sixty years of age, the percentage can reach as high as fifty percent.

Sometimes, colon infection can lead to abscess. A part of the colon swells with pus and the surrounding tissue is virtually destroyed. The larger the abscess, the more risk to your overall health.

Symptoms of Colon Infection

It can be difficult to distinguish between the different types of colon infection. Here’s what you can expect from the negative health conditions detailed above:

  • Clostridium difficile – In mild cases, the patient may have diarrhea five to ten times a day, a low-grade fever, and mild cramps in the abdominal region. Severe cases may present a high-grade fever with temperatures around 102° to 104°, severe diarrhea occurring more than ten times a day, and severe tenderness and pain in the abdomen.
  • Diverticulitis – Pain or tenderness along the left side of the abdomen is one of the most common symptoms. Fever, chills, cramps, and constipation may also be evident.
  • Abscess – Similar to Diverticulitis, an abscess can cause Peritonitis (where the infection spreads outside of the colon) if not addressed immediately.

How to Treat Colon Infections

If you develop Diverticulitis, simply altering your diet to include more high fiber foods may be all you need to help your condition. In cases of severe Diverticulitis, however, surgery may be needed to repair the affected section of colon, so it’s best to avoid these types of problems by taking proactive steps. Staying well hydrated so your electrolyte levels stay balanced is also important.
